On October 31, 2010, the Fifteenth Avenue Baptist Church sponsored an awards banquet and concert benefiting the American Baptist College and the Fifteenth Avenue Baptist CDC. The featured performer was the soulful, passionate, and stirring sounds of Kirk Whalum. During this banquet, four persons received the Shaft of Light Award, which recognizes persons who have demonstrated humanitarian and a philanthropic spirit in the cause of transforming human life. The Awardees were: Dr. Julius Scruggs, Cal Turner, Jr. and Rev. A. Louise McClellan.
